Basketball Team Summary

The Orlando Magic are a professional NBA team that competes as a member of the Eastern Conference Southeast Division. The franchise was first established in 1989 as an expansion franchise and was notable for having some famous NBA stars on the team rosters over its history. This list includes Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway, Grant Hill, Tracy McGrady, Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson, Rashard Lewis and Nikola Vučević.

As of 2021, the franchise has played in the NBA playoffs 16 times in 32 seasons and made it to the finals twice in 1995 and 2009. This places them as the second most successful of the four expansion teams brought into the league in 1988 and 1989 in terms of winning seasons and playoff successes.

History

The team’s history begins in September 1985 when Jim L. Hewitt, an Orlando businessman, approached Philadelphia 76ers GM Pat Williams. They discussed the idea of bringing an NBA team to Orland. Williams, intrigued by the idea, became the front man of the investment group the following year after he left the 76ers. On June 19, 1986, the two held a news conference to announce their intention to seek an Orlando NBA franchise.

Afterwards, the pair held a contest in the Orlando Sentinel newspaper to get names for the franchise. Out of 4,296 entries, the names were narrowed down to “Heat”, “Tropics, “Juice”, and “Magic”. The last one, submitted by 11 people, was picked after Williams brought his daughter to visit Orlando. The name “Magic” was said to allude to the area’s heavy tourist attraction and economic engine, Walt Disney World and its Magic Kingdom.

Achievements

  • 2 Conference titles (1995, 2009)
